Flipped Church

The majority of churches have a sermon every blessed week.
What if, occasionally, we did something else?

Practice & Conversation

Global change starts with you and me, and Sunday morning feels like a perfect time to practice. Flipped church is about creating intentional spaces where every voice adds to the collective wisdom, and  where speaking1 is as sacred as listening2.

World-class
Wisdom

We have the internet! Let's lean in, and learn from the smartest, wisest, and hardest-working people in the world. And use our precious shared time on Sunday to reflect and practice together in community.

Diverse Perspectives

On any given week you'll hear from at least 5 people: your conversation partners, the facilitator, and the creator of that week's source material. Diverse perspectives give us opportunities to learn from one-another, encounter new ways of thinking, and add nuance to our beliefs.

Opportunities
for Generosity

The flipped format can help to reduce church overhead. Freeing up tithes & donations to be given directly to highly effective charities that do an incredible amount of good.

Questions & Answers

Are you against "traditional" churches?

Nope! We are not against anyone. There are, however, lots of things we are excited about. Here are a few of those things in no particular order...

  • We are excited about creating communities of people who can say what they are thinking and listen to one another.
  • We are excited about creating/sharing tools that help congregants to embody and live their beliefs, day by day.
  • We are excited about sharing wisdom from sermons, videos, articles, poems, etc, and talking about them together.
  • We are excited about teaming up with new and existing communities who are excited about the same things.
What does "flipped" mean?

We got the name from the “Flipped Classroom.

The flipped classroom is all about practice and making the best use of our time together.

An audience/lecture format is one way to structure a gathering. Why not devote in-person time to asking questions, working in groups, and embodying the ideals we like to talk about?

Can an existing church become a Flipped Church?

Yes, and we recommend testing the waters first. For example, adding an additional flipped service to your existing Sunday schedule. Quarterly or monthly services might also be a good thing to try.

If you are a decision maker in an established church and would like to brainstorm ways to partially or completely flip your church please send an email to neighborlychurch@gmail.com-

Does everyone have to speak on Sunday?

Nope! All are welcome to share, but no one is required to.

How can I get involved?

Start by subscribing to the newsletter. If there's a new blog post, event, or exciting update we'll post about it there. You're also welcome to email us at neighborlychurch@gmail.com.

Personal Autonomy

You have the power to pause, rewind, or step away from that week's message. Pick the learning style that works best for you. If you want to share with the group, you can share before, during, or after the Sunday gathering.
